What's a Blog?

Blog (Wikipedia entry)

Features:
- Title, the main title, or headline, of the post.
- Body, main content of the post.
- Permalink, the URL of the full, individual article.
- Post Date, date and time the post was published.
- Comments are a way to provide discussion on blog entries. Readers can leave a comment on a post, which can correct errors or contain their opinion on the post or the post's subject. Services like coComment aim to ease discussion through comments, by allowing tracking of them.
- Categories (or tags) - subjects that the entry discusses
- Trackback and or pingback - links to other sites that refer to the entry

What's RSS (Syndication)
RSS (Really Simple Syndication) is a file format used on frequently updated websites (blogs). It makes it possible for users to automatically aggregate and read (or scan) content from multiple sites rather than manually visit each site.

RSS Feed Icon (Chicklet) - Industry standard way for indicating a feed is available - IE 7 & Mozilla Firefox

Setting up a Feed Reader
What's a Feed Reader
- Feed reader or feed aggregator
- "is client software or a Web application which aggregates syndicated web content such as news headlines, blogs, podcasts, and vlogs in a single location for easy viewing." 3
Step 1: Get an account with a web-based feed reader service or download a client
- Bloglines
- Google Reader
- Netvibes (start page)
- Others (including desktop clients)
NOTE: We did not cover client software because systems does not currently support one and some staff cannot install client software.
Step 2: Look for
, the 'add to' (e.g.

icons.
NOTE:
is now standard but only supported on IE 7 & firefox. Firefox has the easiest interaction for setting up feeds.
Step 3: Click on the 'add to' icon for your reader (in this case

Step 4: Read the New Directions Blog content in your reader
