PSALTER, with collects1. ff. ii verso, 1-166v: Biblical psalter, each psalm proceded by a titulus and followed by collects (here “oratio”); the collects generally agree with the Roman series, except for 12 of the Hispanic series (16, 21, 24, 25, 37, 38, 40, 70, 91, 108-110) and 27 not precisely identified (34-36, 41, 44, 45, 48, 50, 54, 59, 67, 71, 73, 78, 79, 82, 87-89, 96, 98, 99, 106, 11811, 119, 120, 142); collect R74 copied twice after Pss. 73 and 74; collect after Ps. 118, 96 is R11811; after Ps. 118, 153 there are 4 collects: R11819 (also copied below in its correct position), R11818, R11813 (also copied above in its correct position), R11812 (substituted above in its correct position by R11811). HBS 83 (London 1949). 2. ff. 167-177v: Ferial and NT canticles. 3. ff. 177v-181v: Gloria; Credo; Pater noster; Te deum; Quicumque vult. 4. ff. 181v-187: Litany including Germanus, Nicholas and Louis among the confessors; Benedict, Maurus, Placidus, Onuphrius and Leonard among the monks and hermits; Scholastica among the virgins. 5. ff. 187-188v: [added, s. XVII] Index in Italian of the psalms for the office of the Virgin arranged according to the hours of the office, and index of the penitential and gradual psalms with reference to page numbers added to the text leaves by the same person. [ff. 189-194v, ruled, but blank, as is the paste-down] Parchment, ff. ii + 194; 232 × 163 (125 × 85) mm. 1-1810 198 206. Evidence of one catchword, f. 80v, horizontally in the inner corner. 20 long lines, ruled in ink with only the vertical bounding lines full length; written above the top line. Written in humanistic. Opening leaves, ff. ii verso and 1, decorated with large miniatures and historiated borders, probably by Matteo Felice, although they have been damaged and heavily repainted. On f. ii verso, the Tree of Jesse; in the upper and inner borders are prophets with their scrolls, in small compartments; in the outer and lower borders are 6 scenes: the Angel appearing to Abraham to announce the birth of a son; Anne giving birth to the Virgin; the Angel confronting Balaam and the ass; marriage of Tobias and Sara; marriage of the Virgin and Joseph; marriage of Isaac and Rebecca. On f. 1, the Annunciation; upper and inner borders with prophets as on f. ii verso; in the outer and lower borders are 5 scenes: Moses greeting Jethro in the desert; Visitation; the Levite with his concubine and father-in-law (Jud. 19, 6); the Angel appearing to Gideon; the Fall; in a sixth compartment, a coat of arms (see below). Leaves of psalter divisions decorated across the top by a band of 3 small miniatures, presumably by the same artist, and generally of 2 OT types at the sides and the NT antitype in the middle, with a full border of dense vine swirls, colored flowers and leaves, putti, animals, peacocks and roundels. The divisions are: f. 26 (Dominus illuminatio mea), Moses and the burning bush, Nativity, the flowering rod of Aaron; in the roundel in the lower margin, David pointing to his eye; f. 41v (Dixi custodiam), the tribes honoring Solomon, Adoration of the Magi, the Queen of Sheba paying hommage to Solomon; in the roundel, David pointing to his mouth; f. 56v (Dixit insipiens), Samson carrying the gates of Gaza, Resurrection, Jonah emerging from the mouth of the whale; in the roundel, a fool with his club; f. 72 (Salvum me fac), the Lord receiving Enoch, Ascension, Elias going to heaven in a chariot; in the roundel, David waist-deep in water; f. 90 (Exultate deo), Moses receiving the Laws on Mt. Sinai, Pentecost, Elijah’s prayer answered with the burning of the bullock; in the roundel, David and 2 young men playing a psaltery and tambourines; f. 107v (Cantate Domino), Solomon receiving the Queen of Sheba, Dormition of the Virgin and Jesus receiving her soul, as a small child, in his arms, Esther before Ahasuerus; in the roundel, David, his hands folded in prayer; f. 125 (Dixit dominus), Christ crowning an immaculate soul as his bride, Coronation of the Virgin, the Angel showing John the Evangelist the immaculate soul as Christ’s bride; in the roundel, Jesus as Salvator Mundi. At psalter divisions, 3-line initials in white-patterned blue or dark pink against infilling of the other color with a colored acanthus leaf in the center, on a gold ground. To begin individual psalms, 3-line gold initials entwined in white vine stem, infilled in red and green, on a blue ground; 2-line initials for the collects in gold on white-patterned blue, red and green fields; 1-line initials for verses alternating blue with red harping or gold with purple. Rubrics in pale red. Pagination added, s. XVII. Bound, s. XVIIin, in red morocco over wooden boards; gold tooled; evidence of 4 clasps; gauffered and gilt edges; fragments of a liturgical (?) text, Italy, s. XV (?), visible through the pastedown. Written in southern Italy, perhaps Naples, to judge from the style of the decoration; the presence of Onuphrius in the litany may also suggest a southern origin. The coat of arms in the lower border of f. 1 has been repainted and is now per fess, or and gules. A lengthy note in Italian accompanying the volume states that the artist “fu certamente senese o fiorentino” and that the book belonged to the Placidi family of Siena, heirs to the Bandinelli family. Date and source of acquisition by Henry E. Huntington unknown.
