Pictorial Highlights

The following photos are just a few samples of the photographs of Emma Goldman and her contemporaries. The photos were scanned from prints using an HP Scanjet IIC and enhanced for screen display in Adobe Photoshop. This police mug shot dates from Goldman's August 31, 1893, arrest on a charge of incitement to riot at a Union Square demonstration of the unemployed in New York.

Police arrested and photographed Goldman in their attempt to implicate her in the assassination of President William McKinley.

Convicted in July 1917 of conspiracy to obstruct the draft, Goldman and Berkman--pictured here during their trial--each were sentenced to two years in prison.
